The Incredible Road Trip Through Idaho That Leads You To 6 Stunning Lakes
Did you know that Idaho is home to thousands of lakes? It’s true! There are more than 2,000 named lakes throughout the state as well as thousands of smaller, unnamed lakes. I love visiting the various bodies of water throughout Idaho and these destinations make for the perfect day trip. So, I created a fabulous road trip that takes you through one of my favorite outdoor areas of the state and to several lakes of all shapes and sizes. So, pack your bags, grab your lake gear, and let’s hit the road!
This road trip takes you to six Idaho lakes and makes a large loop so feel free to start your adventure wherever you’d like. You will travel nearly 370 miles so I suggest you break this trip into multiple days.
Redfish Lake
Redfish Lake, Idaho 83637, USA
Redfish Lake is one of the most picturesque lakes in Idaho. It is an alpine lake south of Stanley and is the largest lake within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. This lake has beautiful beaches if you want to spend some time with your toes in the sand.
Alturas Lake
Alturas Lake, Idaho 83340, USA
Alturas Lake is another alpine lake, just a short drive from Redfish Lake. If you bring a kayak along, this is the perfect place for a paddling adventure. While summer is particularly beautiful, I love visiting in the fall when the vibrant foliage is stunning.
Magic Reservoir
Magic Reservoir, Idaho, USA
Magic Reservoir is a popular lake for water skiing and boating but we particularly love fishing here. This reservoir has low shorelines, making it easy to fish right from the shore. This body of water is home to all types of fish including trout, Kokanee, Sturgeon, Tiger Muskie, and more.
Anderson Ranch Reservoir
Anderson Ranch Reservoir, Idaho 83647, USA
Anderson Ranch Reservoir has something for everyone. Fishing and boating are popular here and if you want to spend some time off the water, camp at one of the 10 campgrounds.
Lucky Peak Lake
Lucky Peak State Park, 9725 ID-21, Boise, ID 83716, USA
Lucky Peak Lake is tucked inside a state park and is quite popular. Spend time on the water, head to Discovery Park for a picnic, go for a hike, and so much more during your visit.
Stanley Lake
Stanley Lake, Idaho 83637, USA
The final stop on our road trip is the gorgeous Stanley Lake. This alpine lake is a fabulous destination for paddling and fishing. I love to capture images of the lake and surrounding landscapes — this area is stunning.
What other stops would you make on this road trip? Which Idaho lakes are your favorite?
