Here in Idaho, hiking season is every season. Although
spring and summer are the seasons where you’ll likely see more people on
the trail, there’s something magical about embarking on a fall hike.
Luckily for us, there are plenty of wonderful hiking trails in the Gem
State that are utterly picturesque all year long. One of these trails is
the little-known Louie Lake Trail near McCall. This colorful hike is
absolutely fantastic no matter what time of year it is. As you traverse
through the forest, you’ll be overwhelmed with rich and beautiful
colors. This is bound to become one of your favorite trails so keep

The Louie Lake Trail can be
found within the wonderous Payette National Forest near McCall. The
short out-and-back trail leads you through a majestic forest landscape
and eventually ends up at a beautiful mountain lake.
The little-known hike is one of
central Idaho's best kept secrets. The trail can be hard to find, but
once you do, you'll see that it was so worth the search. A trail map of
the exact location can be found here. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended to get to the trail.
Although the trail is rated as
moderate, you'll find that it's easily manageable by most hikers. The
trail to the lake is just one mile, so the entire hike clocks in at just
around two miles. The trail may be short, but it definitely makes up
for it with glorious scenery.
During the spring and summer,
the trail will likely be lined by beautiful wildflowers. Vibrant shades
of green are bound to consume you and the area feels like a little
forest oasis, hidden far away from the public eye.
During fall, even more vibrant
colors shroud the forest. Shades of red, orange, and yellow can be seen
in between the towering patches of pine trees. It's one of those
landscapes that makes you want to stop and pinch yourself to make sure
you're not dreaming.
The trail itself boasts
magnificent views but the sight of Louie Lake is bound to knock you off
your feet. Surrounded by tree-covered mountains and boasting crystal
clear water, the lake is like a little paradise hiding within the
forest. The lake is an idyllic swimming and fishing destination and
you'll definitely want to stop and spend some time here.
